Letraset

As a designer it is my goal to strive for autonomy in my work. Because that is where a lot of beauty – and fun – lies. In mistakes, existence and ‘reality’. So I was pleasantly surprised when Niels told me that he bought a batch of letraset letters and wanted to start a project with them.

We will design with the characters, first transferring them onto A4-sized paper, scanning them into the computer and lastly screen printing the final works.

I looked into this technique a little more and was reminded of a graphic designer/artist that I am following for quite a while now. Chris Ashworth, the director of Getty Images and art director of Ray Gun (according to a swift internet search). I know him because of the imperfect and playful typographic designs he posts on Instagram. I wasn’t familiar with the technique he used, and I am very eager to try it for myself.

The letraset itself was almost therapeutic, it was really relaxing to listen to music or a book and paste these characters on paper.

I’m very content with the way this project turned out, and I hope that Niels might use them one day in order to continue his ‘form-study’. The interesting thing about this technique is that the letters brake, which results in intriguing effects. I ran out of letters during the process, so I combined multiple ones in order to form the desired letter.
