Introduction
Hi, welcome to my blog. I’ll try to keep this casual – like diary entries but a little less dramatic. I’ll be updating you, me, whoever reads this, on my internship at Niels Vrijdag. Feel free to browse through these posts or the categories (chrono)logically or randomly.
Before we start, I would like you to know who I am and why I’m doing my internship at Niels’s studio. I’m a 23-year old graphic designer who studies at Willem de Kooning. With a tendency for print and craft. Which means that I get inspired and enthusiastic when I make, preferably by hand. When I came across Niels’s work I saw that same type of enthusiasm. His varied approaches create lively works that are experimental and well composed. His way of working, values, and type of clients are what I was looking for in this internship.
During the upcoming five months I want to tackle one of my biggest struggles, which is maintaining an autonomous approach within my work. I aim to develop a playful, productive, experimental approach towards my works. I would also like to know more about what it’s like to start and run your own studio. And lastly, I want to show initiative. To practice how to present and communicate my ideas.

Agendapunten poster 2.0

In the first Agendapunten post I mention that I would like to create a series of queer activism posters that I can clatter around the internet and city of Rotterdam. I wanted to break away from the ‘CAN’T WAIT TO BE MYSELF’ design, because I want to play and not limit myself in such an early stage of the process.

HipSick, a Rotterdam based performative theatre collective, will release a new show called DIGITAL DUCTTAPE.
“My phone is like a blank slate. It is taped into my existence. When I see my reflection on the screen, I forget who I am. I decide who I am. I am a himbo. we need more HIMBO’S. ONLY CARING ABOUT YOURSELF LOOKING PRETTY FEELING PRETTY BEING FAKE AND NAIVE AND NOT TOO MUCH IN YOUR HEAD. BEING A HIMBO IS A MEDITATION. ONLY ME-TIME FROM NOW ON. JUST WORKING OUT, GAINING SOME MUSCLES, SELLING OUR BODIES TO THE INTERNET. BEING A HIMBO IS THE FUTURE. I AM READY FOR MY CLOSE-UP. PLEASE PHOTOGRAPH ME IN THIS SWEATY MESS”

Letraset

As a designer it is my goal to strive for autonomy in my work. Because that is where a lot of beauty – and fun – lies. In mistakes, existence and ‘reality’. So I was pleasantly surprised when Niels told me that he bought a batch of letraset letters and wanted to start a project with them.

Wytiki

Niels designed the cover-art and poster design for Wytiki, a Dutch musician and singer/songwriter. I was asked to do some final editing and think about merchandise.

Fine Grains Radio

Fine Grains Records is “an amalgam of new music and design, anticipating and releasing artwork and sounds from artists around the globe since 2012”. And they asked Niels to do a rebrand. So, we started with analysing their current identity and sketching forms. The sun was shining, and we felt experimental, so we spray painted a selection of forms.

Poetry collection

Kevin Versteeg, a friend of Niels, writes witty poetry and makes bizarre drawings. His work is perfect to practise my book-binding skills, so we decided to design a bundle of his gathered pieces.

Studio Saber

We visited Saber, a friend of Niels, who is a multidisciplinary artist. He mainly focuses on letters, and creates stunning, colourful works. Saber has a studio in Den Haag, where he wanted to display and sell a few additional artworks of other designers, so we dropped of some of Niels his works.
It was inspiring and fun to see Saber himself, the space and his works. Materials like paint, cutting tools and rulers were arranged neatly all around the studio. Together with pieces of wood Saber found whilst strolling through the city – he likes to collect and cut wood. Making it into furniture. He is very dedicated towards his creations, working on them for 12 to 19 hours a day. His process has many layers, steps and is preformed by hand, so human error occurs. But he keeps going and going, until the work is perfect.

Mauro Rakinho

DJ Mauro Rakinho wanted mini-branding for his playful house music mixtapes. Niels already designed a logo, and Rakinho would like to add a mascotte, – in the form of a chemical test tube character, because he ‘brews’ his music – artwork for his monthly digital releases, a wallpaper for his screensaver for his phone, and we personally would like to add an element of animation because I want to introduce it into my skillset ~fancyshmancy~.

Clubsessies

Club Monk – a boulder club that is stationed in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Eindhoven – asked us to design a poster for their ‘club sessies’. These events are a laid back oppertunity to boulder with friends and socialize with some beers after.
We talked about the vibes of the poster, and Niels directed me towards two fonts that I could use. So this sketching process was more focused on composition. He came up with the idea to make the entire design black, so that it could be printed onto colored paper. Preferably on bright yellow pages, creating a modern eye-catching effect – paying homage to flyer culture.
