• Introduction

Hi, welcome to my blog. I’ll try to keep this casual – like diary entries but a little less dramatic. I’ll be updating you, me, whoever reads this, on my internship at Niels Vrijdag. Feel free to browse through these posts or the categories (chrono)logically or randomly.

Before we start, I would like you to know who I am and why I’m doing my internship at Niels’s studio. I’m a 23-year old graphic designer who studies at Willem de Kooning. With a tendency for print and craft. Which means that I get inspired and enthusiastic when I make, preferably by hand. When I came across Niels’s work I saw that same type of enthusiasm. His varied approaches create lively works that are experimental and well composed. His way of working, values, and type of clients are what I was looking for in this internship.

During the upcoming five months I want to tackle one of my biggest struggles, which is maintaining an autonomous approach within my work. I aim to develop a playful, productive, experimental approach towards my works. I would also like to know more about what it’s like to start and run your own studio. And lastly, I want to show initiative. To practice how to present and communicate my ideas.

  • (Gender) Inclusivity

    (Gender) Inclusivity

Because the poster design for ‘Algemene beschouwingen’ was about transgender care, me and Niels discussed this subject quite a bit. Gender and inclusivity is something that I am passionate about and interested in, but I don’t often incorporate these themes in my work (beside the poster I made earlier of course).

Club Monk, a Dutch boulder gym asked us to think about how they could be more gender inclusive/affirming, especially regarding their restrooms and competition forms. This was really exciting because we got to discuss what is important and what communicates, to not only focus on design but on its (ethical) content as well.

  • Bookbinding

    Bookbinding

During this project I was a little limited with my choice of materials and tools because I wanted to use things that I already owned – I have loads of paper that I don’t use. But I was still able to practice a lot of stitch and bind methods.

  • Album cover

    Album cover

For the upcoming three weeks I will design a vinyl album cover, whilst doing (visual) research into the references of the lyrics. I plan to gather words and visuals that relate towards the project and to experiment with a few different techniques to distort the images and see what happens.

These are most of the books that I looked into during this project. Some where about design, others about Arthur Rimbaud – the poet who the lyrics of this album are inspired by. He is a rather dramatic figure with a rebellious, flamboyant, and provoking voice. It was refreshing to look into his life, works and legacy through an actual book. Normally I browse on the internet for information, but when you read a book on the history of a person or of a specific type of design there is a different kind of focus.

  • Agendapunten poster

    Agendapunten poster

As a response to the upcoming regional elections the Nieuwe Bossche School will host a poster event that allows artists and designers to communicate a political theme/issue that is important to them. Niels gave me the opportunity to pick my own subject of interest. I wanted to make a statement about the (lack of) Dutch transgender-care. The current system is inhumane because people who need urgent assistance have to wait for long periods of time until they receive the help they need. This is a big issue because you should not have to wait in order to get medical or psychological assistance. These are human rights. Besides that, people deserve to feel and be seen. Not to be put in such vulnerable positions.
